From Me To You: The Importance of Inclusive Cancer Care

A cancer diagnosis is a life-altering event for anyone, but for many within the Black community, the challenges of receiving proper care can be even more overwhelming. At From Me To You: The Art of Survival, we are committed to addressing the systemic issues that hinder equitable healthcare and to providing the support that every cancer patient deserves. Our charity was born out of a dire need for greater inclusivity, understanding, and advocacy in cancer care—especially for those who are often overlooked.

The Need for Culturally Sensitive Cancer Care

As a Black woman living with cholangiocarcinoma, a rare cancer of the bile ducts, I, Judith Neptial, have experienced firsthand the barriers that many Black patients face in navigating the healthcare system. My journey has underscored the critical need for culturally sensitive healthcare, as well as better communication between patients and their healthcare providers. Unfortunately, this is a reality for many in the Black community who find it difficult to access the care they need, let alone the culturally competent care they deserve.

One of the most pressing issues I encountered was the lack of representation in clinical trials. For marginalized communities, being excluded—whether intentionally or unintentionally—from life-saving research means fewer treatment options and a lower chance of survival. This is a crucial issue that From Me To You is dedicated to addressing through our advocacy work. Our mission is clear: clinical trials must reflect the diversity of the broader population to ensure that everyone, regardless of their background, has access to the best treatments available.

Practical Support for Cancer Patients

At From Me To You, we offer a range of services to support individuals through their cancer journey. From culturally tailored nutritional advice to hospital visits (both virtual and in-person), we are here to provide the practical support that can make a real difference. Our Black Cancer Support Group offers a safe, culturally aligned space where members can connect, share experiences, and gain strength from one another.

Additionally, we host panel discussions and social events that encourage open, honest conversations about the unique challenges the Black community faces when it comes to cancer care. These gatherings provide an opportunity to learn, share, and create a sense of community that is essential for healing and empowerment.

Advocacy and Education: A Path to Equitable Healthcare

Our advocacy extends beyond our support groups and events. From Me To You works directly with healthcare professionals through our multicultural sensitivity training, ensuring they are equipped to meet the needs of diverse populations. By improving the cultural competence of healthcare providers, we believe that healthcare can become more equitable and inclusive for all patients—regardless of race or background.

Our Goal: Inclusive Cancer Care for All

The goal of From Me To You is simple: to ensure that no one is left behind in their cancer care journey. We are here to advocate for those who may feel overlooked, educate those who are misinformed, and offer unwavering support to ensure that everyone has the resources to not only survive but thrive. Our work is about making sure that the conversation around cancer care is inclusive, and that all patients have access to the treatments and support they need.
